Palatine squad car strikes pedestrian

A Palatine squad car collided early Saturday morning with a pedestrian who remained hospitalized Monday with multiple injuries, authorities said.

Palatine police said the squad car was responding to a 911 call with its emergency lights on when a 21-year-old man ran onto Dundee Road just east of Rand Road and "struck the side of the police vehicle" at just before 3:30 a.m.

Police wouldn't name the officer or say how seriously the man was injured. Police also didn't say the nature of the call the officer was responding to when the crash occurred.

But Palatine Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Falardeau said the man had "multiple injuries" and was taken by ambulance to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, which has a Level 1 trauma center.

The male officer was not injured, police said.

Because the crash involved a Palatine policeman, an outside agency, in this case the Arlington Heights Police Department, was called in to investigate, "just for a neutral perspective," said Palatine police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder.

Arlington Heights police confirmed they're conducting the investigation and hope to have it wrapped up by the end of the week. As of Monday, no one involved in the incident has been cited by authorities.
