Barrington attack nets title again

A rampant Barrington attack proved too much for undermanned Rockford Boylan on Saturday night in the championship of the Mairin Wallner Memorial Soccer tournament.

The host Fillies (13-2-3) stunned the Titans (11-5-0) in the first eight minutes with 2 goals, then built a head of steam and never looked back en route to a 5-0 victory to capture their second straight tournament title.

Mary Kubiuk scored her 16th and 17th goals of the season, while Caroline Condon, Alexa Rowe and Lauren Decraene also struck as the Fillies completed a terrific week that featured a 2-2 draw with state-ranked Glenbrook South earlier in the tournament.

"We talked all week about how important this tournament is, what it means to our program, and how great it is to win (another) title," said Barrington coach Ryan Stengren, "and we can take a strong effort from the match with GBS and build from it as we head into the playoffs."

With nine seniors out of the match attending the Boylan prom, coach Mark Couper called up four freshmen and four sophomores to fill the spots.

An aggressive offside trap and a little confusion along the back allowed Condon to stroll in and beat keeper Kiley Beck, who had little chance in a 1-on-1 situation.

On the turn from 20 yards, Kubiuk caught Kiley a little too far off her line, and the veteran striker went up and over to find the back of the net.

The all-area senior made it 3-0 at 20 minutes when Rowe was sent through on the right side by Decraene. After a long carry to the far end line, Rowe sent a superb diagonal cross to Kubiuk, who collected and went past a sprawling Beck in close.

"Our focus is a little different now and all about putting in the extra needed in order to prepare for the post-season," said the Yale-bound Kubiuk. "We let down a little after going up 2-0 on GBS the other night, but we still played a good match to show that we can play with anyone."

Stengren pulled most of his starting 11 at the hour mark, but not before Rowe found the back of the net on a cracker from 20 yards.

Six minutes later, Decraene beat her mark near the spot to finish the scoring, with Dana Kopp recording an assist.

Prospect consolation champion: From a defensive perspective, Prospect could hardly have played any better this weekend. The Knights engineered three shutouts in three games at the State Line Challenge tournament in Moline, but a loss in penalty kicks dampened the otherwise flawless effort.

On Friday, the Knights battled Lemont to a 0-0 draw before falling penalty kicks. Knights keeper Megan McCabe made 13 saves.

On Saturday morning, Prospect blanked Moline 5-0. Julie Schmoldt netted a pair of goals and addded 2 assists, and Becky Santiago, Rachel Lenke and lauren Leipprandt also scoring. Assists went to Mo O'Keefe and Danielle Brucci. Nikki Risolute (6 saves) and Bridget McDermott (5) shared duties in goal.

Later Saturday, Prospect shut out East Moline 5-0, led by Lenke's 2 goals. Santiago, Leipprandt and Fay Krewer also scored, with Susie Lello, Leipprandt and Andrea Wehrle getting assists. The Knights used three keepers: McCabe (5 saves), Risolute (2) and McDermott (2).
