Police impersonator robs Sugar Grove driver
Sugar Grove police say a man posing as an officer of the law pulled over and robbed a motorist Monday afternoon along Bliss Road.
The robbery took place after a 34-year-old Yorkville woman was stopped by a dark blue or black Chevrolet Impala with flashing lights near Denny Road.
Detective John Sizer said a man from the Impala approached the woman's vehicle, told her he had a gun and then robbed her of a purse, cell phone, iPod and jewelry.
The robber instructed the woman not to look at him and threatened to harm her and her family if she stopped her vehicle on the way home. Sizer said the man then followed the woman part way to her house, where she called the police.
"She obviously was scared to death," Sizer said of the victim.
Because of the circumstances, the woman was unable to give police a detailed physical description of the suspect, described only as an average size white man with a deep voice. The car had no police markings.
Sizer said motorists who believe they've been stopped by a police impersonator should drive slowly to a "place of safety," such as a gas station, fire department, or police station.
"If we've got someone doing this type of thing, the public needs to be aware of it and also thinking about what they would do in that situation," he said.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police at (630) 466-4526, Ext. 37.
