Sox infielder Getz gets an extra day to heal
The White Sox and the Seattle Mariners play a straight doubleheader today (Game 1 starts at 4:05 p.m.) after Monday night's game at U.S. Cellular Field was rained out.
That could be good news for injured second baseman Chris Getz.
Sidelined with a fracture on his middle right finger, Getz was not going to play Monday. The rookie might be ready to go today.
"It feels drastically better," said Getz, who fractured the tip of his finger Saturday while doing a defensive drill. "I think I'll be able to go here pretty soon."
Once the swelling subsided, Getz noticed the drastic difference.
"The middle finger of your throwing hand, it's a very important finger in baseball," Getz said. "Swinging the bat's been pretty uncomfortable, too, but now that the swelling's gone down from the actual bruising, I think we're not too far off."
Settling in: After pitching 6 scoreless innings in as many appearances to open the season, Sox reliever Scott Linebrink allowed a run on 2 hits and 2 walks during the eighth inning Sunday while taking the loss against the Blue Jays.
That's sure to spark some concern, considering the 32-year-old righty was injured over the second half of last season.
Linebrink says there's no reason to worry about anything.
"I think the stuff is there," Linebrink said. "April is all about surviving. In April you're certainly not going to be in midseason form, so I don't look at this and get all worried or anything like that.
"I've seen some pretty good numbers on my velocity. I'm healthy. I feel good. I'm able to do everything without pain."
Staying grounded: John Danks, scheduled to start Monday's game, will go in Game 2 of today's doubleheader opposite Seattle ace Felix Hernandez. Bartolo Colon opposes Chris Jakubauskas in Game 1.
Danks has allowed just 2 earned runs in 19 innings this season.
"I haven't even thought about it," Danks said. "I know it's a big year, and I just want to give us a chance to win every time out. So far, so good. I'm only three games in. It's a long season to go, and hopefully we keep it rolling."
Thome hobbling: Jim Thome was not going to play Monday night after injuring his left heel running the bases.
"He hit the bag with his heel, and today he was sore," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "They went to check with the doctors; they said maybe take one day, two days.
"He's going to start taking some medicine to calm it a little bit. If I need a pinch hitter, I can use him. He can't run, but he can't run anyway."
