Truck drives into newly set bridge beams on Tri-State near Libertyville

A truck driver plowed into beams that were part of a bridge expansion project on the Tri-State Tollway near Libertyville early today after falling asleep at the wheel.

Hunks of concrete fell onto the tracks of the Metra Milwaukee District North Line, causing delays for morning commuters.

Driver Michael Barak, 36, was treated for minor injuries and released from Lake Forest Hospital, Illinois State Police Sgt. Carlita Joe said. The accident happened at 3:37 a.m.

Barak was driving a semitrailer in the northbound lanes when his truck veered off the road and landed on top of the newly installed concrete beams. The 60-foot-long beams were in place to support new lanes in the widening project. The impact damaged at least four beams, police said.

Barak will be ticketed but officials haven't detailed the charges yet. Tollway traffic was open and commuter trains were moving on schedule by 10 a.m.
