Glen Ellyn man, partner trek to North Pole
A DuPage County man and his traveling partner are believed to be the first Americans to get to the North Pole entirely unsupported and self-powered.
John Huston of Glen Ellyn and Tyler Fish of Ely, Minn., arrived at the North Pole Saturday.
That's according to a spokesman for Chicago-based Forward Expeditions.
He says the men skied, snowshoed and even swam over 54 days. They left March 2 from Canada's Ellesmere Island.
The two men carried more than 650 pounds of gear on the trek. Each man reported losing about 30 pounds.
Fish and Huston were racing against a deadline.
Support from a research base was going to pick them up Sunday.
Huston and Fish's expedition aimed to raise awareness and funds for a nonprofit organization that provides online community support for people with health challenges.
