Red Stars rev up attack

Lindsay Tarpley didn't score and Cristiane isn't even in the country, but Chicago Red Stars soccer coach Emma Hayes won't have to answer any questions about her team's attack for a while.

Showing the depth of their talent, the Red Stars (2-0-2, 8 points) took out their frustrations on the Boston Breakers on Saturday night at Toyota Park, winning 4-0.

"All week the press has asked me about our wonderful goal scorers and where are their goals," Hayes said after three games produced only 2 goals, "and they sure came out and played tonight. They turned it on, not just with some quality moments, but I'm talking world-class finishes. That was high-level stuff."

Carli Lloyd started the onslaught with a 10th-minute goal when Karen Carney tapped a free kick to Lloyd and her 28-yard shot deflected off the Boston wall and into the net.

Megan Rapinoe scored her first Women's Professional Soccer goal in the 39th minute, dribbling in at an angle from the right, cutting the ball left and blasting in a shot worthy of her celebration. Three minutes later from nearly the same spot, Carney used a scissor fake to create some space before shooting and making it 3-0 at halftime. Brittany Klein scored in the 52nd minute to go with her 2 assists.

It could have been even worse. Breakers defenders twice saved shots off the goal line.

"I guess you could say I'm a bit in shock about what went on," said Breakers defender Amy LePeilbet, a Crystal Lake native. "They took it to us. They're a great team, a very talented team. They have many amazing attackers, and they were on tonight."

It also was the Red Stars' third shutout of the season.

"Let's remember the clean sheet we got again tonight," Hayes said. "I think you will see from my coaching record, my teams produce goals, but I think they produce a lot of clean sheets too."

So what will the Red Stars do when Cristiane returns from national-team duty?

"Score 5?" Carney said with a smile.
