Many back choice not to air 911 call

I just read Jim Slushers' column and I want to say thanks for taking the high road by not airing the 911 tape. This tape is unique in that the voice is of the suspect, normally it of the victim.

To publicly air a victim's voice at what may be a horrific time in their lives is nothing more than a shock tool.

I commend the editors for not releasing the tape and blame the Hoffman Estates Police department for doing so.

I know they say they have to due to the FOIA act. That's not true.

Under Illinois Compiled Statues, it clearly states that " this Act is not intended to used to violate individuals privacy."

I do have some personal interest in this issue. Four years ago I crafted House Bill 4392 with the support of then-Rep. Robert Churchill this bill was favored by Reps. Robert Flider, Lisa Dugan, Sidney Mathias and John Bradley before it was reassigned.

Since it was introduced during a budgetary and emergency session they lost interest. Your stand is a popular one.

WGN radio personality John Williams had overwhelming support on his on air poll to not release a 911 tape.

Once again thanks for your ethical standards in journalism. You took the high road.
