Boy dies after being struck by truck

DUPO -- Authorities say a 13-year southern Illinois boy died after he was struck by a gravel-filled truck bed which slipped off the vehicle.

St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Richard Wagner says the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Wagner says the driver of the truck had picked up a load of gravel and had pulled over to adjust the load. He says the driver then asked the boy, who was riding his bicycle nearby, to help even out the load.

Wagner says the truck's hydraulic system malfunctioned which caused the truck bed to slip.

The boy was pronounced dead on the scene.

Wagner says authorities are interviewing the truck driver for their investigation.
