Crestwood mayor addresses alleged tainted water

The mayor of a south suburban Crestwood plans to meet with residents to discuss allegations that the village knowingly drew drinking water from a contaminated well for more than two decades.

Crestwood Mayor Robert Stranczek has announced a Saturday meeting to discuss the findings of an investigation conducted by the Chicago Tribune.

At least one resident has filed a law suit based on the newspaper's findings that officials allegedly covered up the presence of dangerous chemicals in the water. The lawsuit seeks class action status.

Earlier this week, Gov. Pat Quinn called for an investigation into the accusations.

According to the investigation, federal officials in the mid-1980s found the Crestwood well contained chemicals linked to cancer. Despite that, village officials allegedly continued to draw the well water.
