Accident disrupts service on South Shore

Metra says service on a north suburban rail line has returned to normal after a gas leak caused delays earlier in the day.

Spokesman Tom Miller says trains along the Union Pacific North Line were stopped for about three hours Friday. Service was also delayed on the South Shore commuter rail line in northwestern Indiana after a pickup truck knocked down a pole that supports the overhead wire system for the trains.

The truck driver fled the scene and is being sought by police.

Trains on the South Bend to Chicago line began running on a limited basis late Friday afternoon. A diesel locomotive was towing South Shore trains on adjacent freight yard tracks.

Crews are working on repairs and full service is expected to be restored by Monday.
