Local pols trying harder than state
Thank you, Indian Prarie Unit District 204, for cutting your projected deficit by more than $5 million without, by your own admission, hurting the learning environment. Would that every branch of government be forced to find ways to save before taking the easy way out of raising taxes.
U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk recently said on WLS-am radio that any politician who cannot cut spending by 15 percent shouldn't be in office. Aides to Gov. Pat Quinn say the Illinois budget deficit is estimated at $11.5 billion.
Quinn's solution is to propose an income tax increase. Aides say Quinn will also propose $850 million in new budget cuts. Are you kidding me? That's les than 1 percent of total spending. Is our state leadership even trying?
