Landlord cited after 11 sickened in carbon monoxide leak
A Carpentersville landlord was cited after 11 people were sent to hospital last week with carbon monoxide poisoning.
Village Manager Craig Anderson said the village's code enforcement department gave the owner of the Wren Road home notices of violation for a malfunctioning furnace that authorities determined caused the carbon monoxide leak on April 16.
Notices were also given because the village determined 10 people were living in the home at the time. Anderson said six people are permitted to occupy the home based on the home's square footage. Six people lived in the home when the village conducted a rental inspection in 2007, Anderson said.
Additionally, authorities said, there were no working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors in the home.
Anderson said no fines were issued because the furnace, as well as the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, were replaced soon after the incident. Anderson said the overcrowding issue was also rectified.
Authorities responded to the home on the first block of Wren Road where occupants complained of nausea and headaches. Six adults and five children were taken to area hospitals and released.
