Partial transcript of 911 call

In a 911 call at 6:44 a.m. Friday, Amanda Engelhardt, 23, and her boyfriend D'Andre D. Howard, 20, both emotionally describe some of what happened in the pre-dawn hours at her parents' Hoffman Estates home, where four people were severely slashed and stabbed. Three of them - Amanda's father Alan Engelhardt, 57, her sister, Laura Engelhardt, 18, and her grandmother, Marlene Gacek, 73, died. Amanda's mother, Shelly Engelhardt, is hospitalized in critical condition. Howard is charged with the murders.

Amanda was the first to speak to the dispatcher, crying and asking for an ambulance and saying her mother, sister and boyfriend were hurt.

Here is an edited transcript, starting after Howard began to speak.

Dispatcher: What's happening? Hello, what is your name sir?

Howard: Ah (garbled). I'm woozy, I'm really woozy.

Dispatcher: Where is the girl? Can you put her back on the line?

Howard: Laura tried... Laura tried to... Laura tried to stab me.

Dispatcher: Who tried to stab you?

Howard: She put the knife in me and she stabbed me in the arm.

Dispatcher: OK, hold on a second, all right?

Howard: I fought for the knife...

Dispatcher: Who stabbed you, sir? Sir, who stabbed you?

Amanda: Hello.

Dispatcher: Who stabbed him?

Amanda: Um... My sister did.

Dispatcher: Where is your sister now?

Amanda: She's - I don't know, I think she might be (garbled)...

Dispatcher: Where is she, ma'am?

Amanda: She's on the floor.

Howard again begins to speak, telling the dispatcher Amanda's name and his name and saying they planned to marry in the summer in a ceremony in the back yard. Then he gasped, "I won't make it."

Dispatcher: You will make it, sir. Just tell me, we've got help on the way, all right? Listen Andre, was it her sister that stabbed you?

Howard: Yes.

Dispatcher: Where is she right now.

Howard: We fought for the knife and I stabbed her, and she, she's not, she's not talking.

Dispatcher: She's not. OK. So she stabbed you and you stabbed her?

Howard: Yes.

Dispatcher: OK, are you and her the only two that are hurt?

Howard: No, her dad.

Dispatcher: Where's her dad.

Howard: He's dead

Dispatcher: He's dead?

Howard: He's dead.(Sobs)

Dispatcher: OK. Hold on a second, sir.

Howard: I'm dying.(Sob)

Dispatcher: OK, Andre. You stay with me on the phone, all right?

Howard: (Unintelligible word). Marlene. Marlene. I'm cold, I'm so cold.

Dispatcher: OK, Andre. What exactly happened? How did this start?

Howard: She, she. She wrestled me for the knife and stabbed me in my arm, my right bicep. She got a... she got a...

Howard stops talking, and Amanda tells the dispatcher she's going to answer the door. Asked where the knife is, she said, "I don't know."

Dispatcher: OK, Amanda, look, you're doing real good, All right. What's going on with Andre?

Amanda: (Crying) He's stabbed in the arm really bad.

Dispatcher: Yeah. What's happening with him right now. He just stopped talking to me.

Amanda: Um. He keeps going kind of in and out.

Dispatcher: Is he only stabbed in the arm or is he stabbed elsewhere?

Amanda: He's only stabbed in the arm, I think.

Dispatcher: OK. What's going on with the father?

Amanda: (Crying) I think he's dead.

Dispatcher: Where is he in the house?

Amanda: In the den.

Dispatcher: Where is he in the house?

Amanda: He's in the den

Dispatcher: He's in the den. With Andre?

Amanda: Yes.

Dispatcher: And your sister?

Amanda: They're all in the den.

Dispatcher: They're all in the den. OK.

Amanda: Grandma's in the kitchen.

Dispatcher: OK. Are you hurt at all?

Amanda: No.

Police arrive and the dispatcher assures Amanda ambulances are coming. The call ends.
