ECC presents family drama 'All My Sons'
Elgin Community College Theatre presents "All My Sons," an Arthur Miller World War II homefront family drama that begins a three-weekend run on Friday, April 24, in the Visual and Performing Arts Center SecondSpace Theatre, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
The play is presented at 8 p.m. Fridays, April 24, May 1 and May 8, and Saturdays, April 25, May 2 and May 9. On Sundays April 26, May 3 and May 10, performances begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $11 for adults and $9 for students and seniors.
Written by legendary American playwright Arthur Miller, "All My Sons" created an uproar when first produced in 1947. Inspired by the true story of a callous manufacturer who knowingly sells defective airplane engines to the armed forces during the war, this taut drama tests the family bonds of a profiteer whose pilot son is missing in action. The play won a Tony Award in 1947 and has been the subject of two films and a television drama.
The play marks the ECC directorial debut of Mary Hatch, dean of the Liberal, Visual and Performing Arts Division at the college. She has worked in nearly every area of the theater onstage and backstage, and has a wide range of experiences as an actress, stage manager and producer.
Hatch's theater credits include production stage manager for the Oak Park Festival Theatre, producing director for Chicago's City Lit Theater, and founder and producing director of Talisman Theatre - known in Chicago and the Fox Valley for producing classic plays and new plays with classic qualities. She has also worked closely with Chicago Dramatists on new plays in development, directing and acting in countless readings and workshops.
Hatch has a personal connection to the play's themes as she comes from a family steeped in military traditions. Her parents served as sergeants in World War II, her oldest brother served in the Marines during the Vietnam War and her other brother was an Air Force captain.
