Palatine police charge man with burglary

A burglary suspect played hide-and-seek with Palatine police - and lost - after they found him crouched under a bed in the house they say he tried to rob, reports said.

Police were called to the 1900 block of High Grove Lane just after midnight Saturday for a burglary in progress and were told by a resident that the intruder had run into the basement.

Police found Abraham G. Veloz, 34, of the 300 block of North Wolf Road in Wheeling, hiding under a bed and carrying a throwing star, a martial arts weapon, said Palatine police Cmdr. Kurt Schroeder.

Veloz, who was arrested without incident, was charged with residential burglary, a felony, and misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon. There were four people home at the time, and one told police he was awakened by his mother screaming. Authorities believe Veloz got in through an unlocked window.

His bond was set at $75,000.
