Bankrupt Sun-Times cuts 140 non-union jobs

A published report says Sun-Times Media Group Inc. trimmed about 140 jobs last week to reduce costs during its bankruptcy reorganization.

A Sun-Times spokeswoman told Crain's Chicago Business for a story posted Monday on its Web site the cuts affect about 10 percent of the Chicago-based company's nonunion staff.

The spokeswoman says the company wants to reduce compensation costs by 15 percent. She doesn't name any specific jobs but says all publications and business units are affected.

Crain's didn't name the spokeswoman. Sun-Times spokeswoman Lindlee White didn't immediately return messages from The Associated Press.

The owner of the Chicago Sun-Times, which filed its bankruptcy petition March 31, listed $479 million in assets and $801 million in debt.
