Surging Hoffman sweeps; Elk Grove takes 3
Hoffman Estates' baseball team continued its resurgence from a rough start as it swept a Saturday nonconference doubleheader at Elgin 3-2 and 11-1 in 5 innings.
Freshman winner Kevin Grudzinski had 5 strikeouts in 5 innings, and Mike Kiviranta had a 2-run double in a 3-run first in Game 1. Kyle Sertich got the save and went 3 innings to win Game 2 as Zach Demmon hit a 2-run homer and Don Rathje was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and 3 RBI in the Hawks' (5-10) fourth straight win.
Elk Grove wins three: Elk Grove (14-4) hit 6 homers in 3 victories in the Niles North tournament.
All games were scheduled for 5 innings, but the Grens beat Niles North 7-5 as Carl Sugihara (3-for-3) hit a game-winning 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan Martinski also homered.
Elk Grove pounded Northside Prep 23-5 as Nico Piscopo hit a grand slam and winner Colin Semler and Eric Kaczynski homered. Sugihara was 3-for-3.
The Grens beat Vernon Hills 3-1 as Joey DeHuebles threw a 2-hitter and Tony Logli homered.
Barrington 8, Naperville C. 7: Chris Holke hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh as Barrington (7-5) snapped a three-game losing streak. Anthony Brignola went 3-for-5.
Prospect 10, Lake Zurich 9: Prospect (5-8) lost an 8-0 first-inning lead but won it on Peter Bonahoom's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Maine West 8, Wheeling 4: Winner Nate Andersen went 6 innings, Lucas Udischas was 2-for-4 and Connor Skoczynski and Paul Solka homered for Maine West (9-4). Neal Christensen went 3-for-4 for Wheeling (2-12).
Leyden sweeps Addison Trail: Leyden (8-5, 4-1) got complete games from Ricky Zapata and Jeremy Stawychny as it swept Addison Trail 2-1 and 10-3 in the West Suburban Gold.
Zapata threw a 6-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk in the opener. Stawychny threw a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and no walks and went 3-for-4.
Palatine 10, Antioch 7: Andy Prombo had a 3-run double and Jim Smearman was 3-for-4 for Palatine (4-10).
BG, Glenbrook South split: Buffalo Grove (5-7) rebounded from a 12-1 loss in 6 innings with a 7-6 win on Jake Copeland's single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. James Hurley homered, Ryan Nisbet doubled and tripled and Tommy Ricciardi had 3 hits and 2 RBI.
Mundelein 13, Meadows 11: Mundelein nearly blew a 13-run lead in the fifth when Meadows (6-7) scored all of its runs with 3 RBI by Pat Conlin.
Streamwood 10, Schaumburg 9: Dave Compitello, Matt Mistrata and Tim Massat had 2 hits and an RBI as Schaumburg (6-6) lost its fifth straight.
Nazareth sweeps St. Viator: St. Viator (8-6, 0-2) had a four-game winning streak snapped as it was swept by visiting Nazareth 4-3 and 11-3 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader. Brett Kay, Julian Sipiora and Mike Fleming hit solo homers.
