Lake Forest girls capture own title, beating undefeated Stevenson
The Stevenson girls soccer team took its best shot against Lake County's best team Saturday afternoon.
Sparked by their outstanding defense, the Patriots stayed with the Lake Forest Scouts until the final three minutes.
But Rachel Quon showed why she's headed to Stanford in the fall when she scored the game-winning goal in spectacular fashion, enabling the Scouts to beat previously unbeaten Stevenson 1-0 to capture the title of their own Lake Forest Snowbowl tournament.
"Nicole (Lipp) slipped a perfect ball to me," said Quon, who notched her eighth goal in eight games. "It was nothing else but the goalie (Courtney Levy) and me.
"I had a girl following me for the whole second half. She was on my tail and I figured if I go wide and checked in to get ahead of her. It was a big challenge and makes the game more fun."
Levy who made 7 saves, including some outstanding stops until Quon's goal.
"It was a good shot," Levy said. "I went down early and I knew she was going to take it. I figured either she was going to shoot it or cross it. I went down and I wasn't sure if I hit it or not. It did get under me."
The Patriots (4-1-3, 2-1) employed an impressive game plan.
"(Lake Forest) was a nice team," said Stevenson coach Mark Schartner. "I think the three days in a row got to us a bit. We tried to keep up with them, but Lake Forest moves the ball so fast.
"We did a good job marking all over the field, because they're so good in the open space and it made it hard when you start to tire a bit. You do what you have to do with the talent you have. Our team played a strategically fine game."
The Scouts (7-0-1, 3-0) beat a unbeaten team for the second straight day after topping Carmel on Friday.
"Stevenson played well and they were pesky," said Scouts coach Ty Stuckslager. "They double-teamed up and got on us quickly. We just not able to get a final shot. There's a reason why Stevenson was undefeated."
Carmel 4 Prairie Ridge 0: Kassidy Brown raised her level a few notches, and the rest of the Corsairs followed. Brown scored her first hat trick this year, notching 3 goals in 13 minutes, enabling Carmel (9-1) to roll past Prairie Ridge 4-0 to take third place at the Lake Forest tournament.
"I think we found some intensity with this game," Brown said. "We had trouble getting the ball up top against Lake Forest. We pushed up top right off the bat. We just knew we could beat their back line."
Lauren Lehman assisted on Brown's first goal, in the seventh minute. Brown converted a penalty kick three minutes later and headed in her third tally off Liz Errenot's corner kick.
Lauren Bowles added the other Carmel goal late in the first half.
Corsairs keeper Maddie Allen mad 3 stops and earned her seventh shutout in 10 games.
"I definitely believe we came out stronger," said Corsairs coach John Halloran. "All around it was better. I don't think we were under heavy pressure like it was against Lake Forest."
Lakes 2 Crystal Lake South 1: The Eagles (6-3) made it two out of three games with their 2-1 win over Crystal Lake South at the Lake Forest tournament.
Ashley Neubeck and Michelle Kosman each had goals, and Rebecca Hill and Britany Mooney added assists.
"Crystal Lake South was a tough, fast physical team," said Lakes coach Kevin Kullby. "Getting the last two games was important. Everybody is learning about passing and moving the ball."
