St. Charles mechanic to host free women's car clinic

The St. Charles Mothers Club is teaming up with a local mechanic Monday to offer women a free crash course on basic automotive care and maintenance.

The Car Clinic for Women is planned for 7:30 p.m. at Autopractor Inc., 1820 Production Drive. Topics include oil changes, windshield wiper replacement, tires and suspension.

"We're going to go over brakes and will have an engine cut apart so they can see the inner-workings," Autopractor co-owner Sean Kellett said. "They can go underneath, check it out and experience what it is."

Kellett, who started the business with Gary Figurski in December 2005, said 80 percent of his customers are women, many of whom show an interest in mechanics but have little experience in the field.

A similar program sponsored by the Mothers Club two years ago attracted about 35 women, prompting the idea for another clinic. Kellett said the environment is relaxed and open to any questions.

"We had a real positive turnout the last time," he said. "The women were just so ecstatic to learn about their cars."

The Mothers Club is a nonprofit organization that supports local charities and provides scholarships to local mothers.
