All must be free to think in civil society
In response to the letter to the April 1 Fence Post by Theodore M. Utchen, I would like to say that I agree with him on the First Amendment and the freedom of religion it stands for. It is a great blessing to the country and to the church. The government should not force on anyone any particular religion. People should also be free from religion if they so choose. The point I wish to make is this: The government is there to legislate what it considers good values for the nation. During the Nazi era it was decided that not all should have equal protection under the law. Hitler and others said religious people should keep their values to themselves. I think this was bad. Religious people said all have the right to equal protection under the law. This was good, and it is too bad that they were not more vocal. My point is that everyone gets their values from some source. All should have the right to express themselves whether religious or irreligious. All must be free to think and say what is best for a civil society.
