Security guard killed during shoplifting attempt
EAST ST. LOUIS -- Authorities say a security guard was killed with his own gun during a shoplifting attempt at an East St. Louis grocery store.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone identified the Schnucks supermarket guard as 43-year-old Wayne Groom.
Illinois State Police Lt. Jim Morrisey says Groom confronted the alleged shoplifter on Tuesday afternoon. Morrisey says as Groom took the man to a back room to hold him until police arrived, the suspect grabbed the gun and shot him.
Stone says the 43-year-old Groom was shot in the back of the head and right leg. He died at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis.
The suspected shooter fled but was captured by police. He's in custody but hasn't been charged.
