Filing at the last minute? Join the crowd

Haven't sent your taxes in? Neither have millions of others.

Typically, 20 percent of Americans wait until the last week to file their returns, said U.S. Postal Service spokesman Tim Ratliff.

Ratliff said statistics weren't available on how many people are expected to mail their returns vs. filing electronically. Still, you can expect your local post office to be busy.

All post office stations and branches will close at their regular times on Wednesday and will not offer street collectors or extended hours of counter service. Tax returns mailed at those locations must arrive by the closing time to make the midnight IRS deadline, he said. Tax returns mailed in a street collection box must be deposited by the last collection time posted on the box to make the IRS deadline.

To help procrastinators, here are your options:

Processing centers

Mail will be collected at 11:59 p.m. and postmarked with the April 15 cancellation from collection boxes outside these processing and distribution centers:

• 500 E. Fullerton Ave, Carol Stream

• 1300 E. Northwest Hwy., Palatine

Evening hours

Otherwise, you have these regular full-service post offices until 7 p.m.
