Michna sets passing records as Slaughter moves to 5-0 on season

Chicago Slaughter quarterback Russ Michna set or tied two league records and the he Slaughter stayed perfect at 5-0 with a 74-60 win over Marion (Ohio) at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates on Saturday night.

Michna, who has played at Conant High School, Eastern Illinois University and with the Chicago Rush, set the CIFL record for passing yards in a game with 305 and tied Damon Dowdell and Matt Cottengim for the league record for passing touchdowns in a game with eight. In all, Michna was 22-of-32 for 305 yards and eight touchdowns through the air.

The two teams battled back and forth in the opening half before Chicago took a 42-37 lead into the break.

The start of the third quarter is what spelled the difference for the Slaughter. Following a Chris Nendick field goal, the Slaughter forced a four-and-out by the Marion offense and got the ball back at their own 19-yard line. Four plays later, Michna hit Donovan Morgan for a 15-yard touchdown with 5:18 left in the period to stretch Chicago's lead to 52-37.

Marion cut the lead back to 52-43 on a 24-yard pass from reigning CIFL Offensive Player of the Week Tavares Woodley to Maurice Douse. Chicago answered on the ensuing drive, stretching its lead to 59-43 on a Michna to J.D. Sheldon 17-yard strike. Douse powered in from two yards away on Marion's next drive, but Chicago again answered. This time, Michna dove in from a yard away to make it 66-50.

Woodley hit Ian Schmidt on a 25-yard strike to close it to 66-58, but Michna's eighth touchdown pass of the night sealed the deal. He hit Donovan Morgan for a 14-yarder to make it 74-58.

The Mayhem recorded a safety with two seconds left to provide the final margin.

Marion dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
