Charges possible in worker's death

BELLEVILLE -- The St. Clair County state's attorney will decide within weeks whether to file charges in the death of a 39-year-old worker in a highway construction zone.

Investigators say Cedrick Gasper of East St. Louis was sitting on the rear bumper of a pickup truck last June when a tractor-trailer hit several large orange construction barrels being used to direct traffic on Illinois Route 15.

The tractor-trailer then hit the pickup head on, catapulting Gasper. He died later at a hospital.

State's Attorney Robert Haida says Illinois State Police recently provided him with a completed accident reconstruction of the wreck. Haida says he'll decide whether to file charges within 30 days.
