Lakes edges Grayslake North 3-2
Lakes' baseball team scored early, then hung on to edge visiting Grayslake North 3-2 on Saturday.
Paul Kukulka's 2-run single highlighted a 3-run bottom of the first for the Eagles. Mark Ortman capped the inning with a sacrifice fly. Lakes starting pitcher Travis Vanderwall allowed single runs in each of the first two innings but nothing else. He pitched 5 innings for the win, striking out eight while yielding 5 hits and 1 walk. Tim Ryan threw the sixth for Lakes (5-4), and D.J. Snelton came in for the save in the seventh, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Grayslake Central 11, Waukegan 0: A four-run first inning propelled the Rams (7-3) to the nonconference victory and their fourth shutout of the year.
Mike Gentile doubled and had 4 RBI, while Andrew Hosford and Josh DeAngelis both doubled for Central. Meanwhile, teammate Kurt Schmidt had a double, single and scored 3 runs. On the mound, Kevin De3Rue (2-0) struck out four batters.
Stevenson 4, Naperville Central 1: Stevenson scored 3 runs in the top of the 10th inning to break up a 1-1 tie and pull out the victory.
Bill Dorn drove in the go-ahead RBI on a suicide squeeze. Corey Lasky scored the run. He went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple. On the mound, Matt Robin went 7 innings and rolled up 9 strikeouts for the Patriots, who improve to 8-1.
Mundelein 16, Evanston 1: Kevin Barber had a monster day for Mundelein, going 4-for-4 at the plate. His effort included a double and a triple.
Jay Mueller also came up big for the Mustangs. He went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double. Mundelein, which scored 11 runs in the first inning, improves to 9-1.
Lake Zurich 12, St. Charles North 4: A 6-run fifth inning erased a 1-run deficit and propelled the Bears to victory.
Lake Zurich got 3 hits and 2 RBI from Tanner Witt while Mike Miller, Sam Aslan and Ricky Erickson each had 2 hits. Pitchers Auston Cox and Parker Asmann teamed up to get the victory, pitching 4 and 3 innings, respectively, for the Bears, who move to 6-5-1 overall.
Warren splits: Warren went 1-1 on Saturday, beating Palatine 4-3 and losing to Crystal Lake South 5-2.
In the victory, Kevin Colburn and Sean Kennedy each had 2 hits while pitcher Jeff Johnson racked up 5 strikeouts in six innings. In the loss, Scott Heelan went 3-for-4 at the plate.
McHenry 9, Grant 3: Solid defense by McHenry foiled several Grant scoring chances in the nonconference battle that dropped Grant to 2-5-1 overall.
The Bulldogs' only offense came on Jeremy Wiker's 3-run homer.
Cary-Grove 14, Antioch 0: Antioch was down 9-0 by the third inning. Dillon Healy had a double for the Sequoits, who drop to 2-5 overall.
