Wise gets first hit, then promptly gets picked off
And then there was one.
With his single in the sixth inning Friday night, Dewayne Wise snapped an 0-for-12 start to the season. That eased the boos, but only for a minute before Wise was picked off first base and thrown out at second trying to steal.
White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez is now the Sox' lone regular still looking for his first hit of the season.
Ramirez was 0-for-3 in Friday's loss to the Twins and is 0-for-13 on the season.
Coming off a big rookie year with the Sox, Ramirez has been facing a steady diet of off-speed pitches.
"Alexei's got to make adjustments," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "The longer you keep chasing those breaking balls, they're going to keep throwing it. They're not stupid. They've got scouting reports, they've got scouts, they've got people watching, because that's what we do.
"I don't think they're pitching any different between last year and this year. I think he's chasing more balls this year than he was last year. But I think he will make it."
Lineup change: Chris Getz was back in the leadoff spot Friday, but Josh Fields batted behind him.
On Thursday, A.J. Pierzynski hit second.
Fields was a frequent strikeout victim when he filled in for the injured Joe Crede in 2007, but the White Sox' new third baseman has shortened up his swing and might find a permanent home in the No. 2 spot.
"The only reason I moved the lineup is because I've got too many lefties together," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "And I put Fields second because I think he's the one swinging the bat a little bit better right now and it spreads the lineup a little better."
Guillen hopes he doesn't have to shake up the batting order on a daily basis.
"I just laugh because I was back in my e-mails, I've got 35 lineups," Guillen said. "I think when you're not producing, all of a sudden a lot of people come up with ideas."
Great start: Shortstop Gordon Beckham, the Sox' first-round pick last June, has come out swinging at Class AA Birmingham.
Beckham was 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday night's 4-2 win over Chattanooga. In Thursday's season opener, Beckham was 4-for-6 with an RBI and 3 runs scored.
