Fire get 3-3 tie with Earthquakes on late goal
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Chris Rolfe scored in the 85th minute with San Jose down to 10 men to salvage a 3-3 tie for the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
Rolfe scored from 22 yards out as Chicago took advantage of the second yellow card on Earthquakes reserve Shea Salinas. Salinas came on in the second half and received cards in the 73rd and 81st minutes. The tie allowed the Fire (2-0-2) to remain unbeaten this season.
It was another disappointing outcome for San Jose (1-2-1), which was coming off a poor performance in Kansas City last week and couldn't hold on to a late lead Saturday.
Offseason acquisition Bobby Convey scored on his first official shot with the Earthquakes to put San Jose up 2-1 just before halftime, then drew a 75th-minute penalty kick that Arturo Alvarez converted into a go-ahead goal.
Mexican international Cuauhtemoc Blanco came on at the half for Chicago and made an immediate impact. He lobbed the ball to Brian McBride, who brought it down at the top of the box, then wheeled and fired it home in the 57th minute.
San Jose took the early lead on a 14th-minute goal by Ryan Johnson, who was set up by Chris Leitch and Darren Huckerby.
Chicago tied the game at 1 when Logan Pause found an open Marco Pappa on the right side of the penalty area. Convey put San Jose ahead just two minutes later when he jumped on a poor clearance attempt by Chicago defender Brandon Prideaux and pushed the ball past keeper Jon Busch.
