Caterpillar cutting workers at N.C. plant
CLAYTON, N.C. -- Caterpillar Inc. is cutting its work force again at a North Carolina plant as the recession weakens demand for its heavy earth-moving equipment.
The News & Observer reported Friday that the company won't say how many jobs are being cut at its plant in Clayton, about 15 miles southwest of Raleigh. Company spokesman Jim Dugan said workers were notified this week.
The Peoria-based company announced furloughs of hundreds of employees in December at plants in Clayton and Sanford. Before those cuts, the company employed about 1,400 in the Raleigh area, including 800 in Clayton.
Dugan said in a statement the company was "taking steps in response to the economy and lower demand for its products."
Caterpillar's products are manufactured in 50 U.S. facilities and in 23 other countries.
