Sugar Grove trustee loses seat after write-in bid

Despite receiving 450 votes, Sugar Grove Village Trustee Mary Heineman lost her write-in election bid to retain her seat Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

Robert Bohler, Thomas Renk and Rick Montalto won. Heineman was 150 votes behind the next-closest candidate, Joseph Wolf, in the six-way race for three seats. She was the only write-in candidate.

In the battle of the write-in candidates for Batavia park board, Gary Foiles defeated Commissioner Alan Leard for a two-year seat. Both sought to fill out the remaining term of Phil Elfstrom, who resigned last fall. Foiles received 96 votes, Leard 12.

In Geneva Township, Robert Kovacs won a seat as trustee, edging fellow write-in David Frydrychowicz. There were four 4-year terms available, but only three names on the ballot: John Connolly (1,973 votes), Trustee Richard Sharp (1,893 votes) and Trustee Sharon Brazill (1,883 votes.) Thirty-seven people voted for Kovacs, 20 for Frydrychowicz.

Write-in votes for races throughout Kane County were tabulated Wednesday.

All election results are unofficial until the clerk has processed absentee and provisional ballots, certified the vote and canvassed the election, a process that could take several weeks, according to Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham.
