Newcomer wins Carol Stream library seat

A newcomer was the largest vote-getter in the race for Carol Stream library board, unseating two-year board member Thomas Arends.

With all precincts counted, unofficial results showed challenger Michael Wade had 1,315 votes. Three incumbents also won election in the hotly contested race for four seats.

Incumbent Mary Hudspeath had the second-highest number of votes with 1,283, and Leslie Shambo came in third with 1,238.

Robert Douglas, an incumbent, retained his seat and was just four votes ahead of Arends. Douglas had 1,191 votes.

Wade said he had no comment about the election Tuesday night.

Douglas said he was happy that at least three incumbents were returning to the board, which had been criticized by a slate of challengers campaigning against past referendums that aimed to expand the library at a new location. However, current board members contended the campaign included misinformation by the four challengers, including Wade.

"I'm sure Mr. Wade will come with a good outlook to the board," Douglas said. "I certainly hope he comes in with the interests of the library."
