By 3 to 1 ratio, voters want Route 53 extended

By a crushing 3 to 1 ratio, Lake County voters overwhelmingly said they want the state to extend Route 53 northward into the county.

But the question remains: Will shovels ever actually hit the ground for the long-awaited project, which has been on the planning books for decades?

Because the ballot question was advisory and not binding, its results may have little bearing on whether the highway is built.

With votes in all of 481 precincts counted, unofficial results showed 63,645 voters said "yes" to the extension while 20,404 voters opposed it.

County officials said they put the question to voters to help build consensus on the road plan.
