Kudos to Geneva girls basketball

My wife and I got very excited during the recent basketball competitions, as we read about the record breaking season the Geneva girls team was building. It was almost unbelievable for any local team to achieve a record of 32 wins and no losses, which put them into the Final Four, held at Illinois State University at Normal.

We were so tickled by their accomplishment that we made the trip to ISU for that weekend to cheer them on. It was especially exciting to see more Geneva fans in the stands than any of the other three teams had, and the girls played their hearts out. Even though they lost in both their games, everyone in Geneva should be very, very proud, as we are, of what they accomplished this year.

We don't know any of the members of the team, nor any of their parents, but the excitement and pride was evident everywhere at the final games. In fact, it looked as though most of Geneva's great football team was there to act as cheerleaders for the girls, a nice thing to see!

We are disappointed not to see very much made of all this in the local press, and can only hope that they were properly honored at the school on their return. We are sure the team was saddened to lose in the finals, but they should not be. The competition at that level is awesome, and this was Geneva's first ever trip to the Final Four.

They played as hard and well as they could, every minute, with never a thought about giving up. In both their games, they actually led by one or two points late in the third quarter against Young, and similarly in the second quarter against Wheeling.

This was a wonderful effort by a great team of girls, coached by a person who also is a winner, Gina Nolan. Hold your heads high, Geneva girls basketball team, you will long be remembered by all of us! Thanks for a wonderful season.
