The village of Lake Villa will flush fire hydrants from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Sunday, April 19 and Friday, May 1. Residents may experience rusty water and/or lower water pressure during these times. Signs will posted signs in neighborhoods on those days. For details, call the water department at (847) 245-6900.
Rabid bat found:
A bat found in a Gurnee yard March 26 has tested positive for rabies, the first in Lake County this year. There was no human or pet contact, according to the Lake County Health Department, but residents are urged to avoid contact with bats. Last year, nine bats of 200 submitted for testing, were positive for rabies, which is consistent with the state average. In Lake County, bats are the only animals that have tested positive for rabies for more than 20 years. Most commonly, people get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal but contact from infectious material from a rabid animal, such as saliva, comes in contact with one's nose, mouth, an open wound or gets directly into the eyes. Anyone who has direct contact with a bat or notices a bat acting in an unusual manner, such as flying in daylight or lying on the ground or in your home, should call (847) 949-9925. If the bat is inside of your house, do not chase it away because it may be needed for rabies testing.
Lake County committee to meet:
The Lake County Board's public works and transportation committee will meet Wednesday to discuss concerns about the odor from the Countryside Landfill near Grayslake. Complaints about the odor last year prompted governmental study. The meeting is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the county government center in Waukegan.
