DUI charges after 7 hospitalized in tollway wreck

Seven occupants of a minivan were taken to area hospitals with nonlife threatening injuries Friday after a crash on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway between Route 72 and Route 47.

State Police Master Sgt. Glenn DeVries said police received a call about 10:15 p.m. of a car being driven erratically and weaving from shoulder to shoulder.

The Chevy Malibu slammed into the back of a minivan, causing it to roll over into a ditch, DeVries said.

The car also rolled over in the center median, he said.

The lone occupant and driver of the car, an unidentified Aurora man, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and having no proof of insurance, DeVries said.

The seven occupants of the 1999 Ford minivan were from the Rockford area, according to DeVries.

"Both vehicles rolled over as a result of the collision," he said, but no one was thrown clear. Fortunately, it just resulted in injuries that didn't turn out to be life threatening," he said.
