Lakes take two from Belvidere, 10-1, 5-1
Lakes' softball team made its trip to Belvidere worthwhile Saturday.
The Eagles not only picked up their first wins of the season thanks to a sweep of the nonconference doubleheader, but also pulled off a rare triple play.
Lakes won 10-1 and 5-1 to even its record at 2-2.
Shannon Cooley paced the Eagles in the opener with her arm and bat. The sophomore socked a solo home run in the first inning and scored again in the seventh after drawing a leadoff walk.
Meanwhile, in the circle, Cooley (1-2) scattered 3 hits and recorded 6 strikeouts. Jenelle Christiansen had a single and 3 RBI for the Eagles.
Taylor Dare earned the win in Game 2 and was the beneficiary of a triple play. Lakes turned the trick in the second inning with the bases loaded.
Eagles coach Bill Hamill had freshman center fielder Megan Massie playing directly behind second base, and the strategy paid off when the Belvidere North batter hit a line drive to Massie, who caught the ball for the first out.
Massie then flipped the ball to second baseman Naomi Tesar, who stepped on second for the second out, and then fired the first baseman Cooley, who was standing on the bag, to complete the 8-4-3 triple play.
"That was pretty nice, because it was the bases loaded in a 1-0 game," Hamill said. "I've experienced that only one time before as a coach."
Dare (1-0) allowed 5 hits over 7 innings. Tesar went 2-for-3 with a double to support her sophomore pitcher.
Massie and Dare also had doubles.
Carmel, Waukegan split: Rachel Tack fired a 1-hitter with 11 strikeouts, and kept her ERA at 0.00, as Carmel salvaged a split of its nonconference doubleheader at Dugdale Park in Waukegan.
Carmel won the second game 7-0 after losing the opener 2-1, as Tack was outdueled by Bulldogs ace Stephanie Rieuwpassa.
In Game 2, Shea Crowley and Sally Snarski both went 3-for-4, while Claire Anastos was 2-for-3 for Carmel (2-1). Crowley cranked a pair of doubles and scored 2 runs, the freshman Snarski doubled and knocked on 2, and Anastos had 2 RBI and a run scored.
Tack - who has not allowed an earned run in 21 innings this season - had 10 strikeouts in Game 1.
