Pay raises, pantry cost votes in Avon

I know that most Americans are still politically exhausted following 2008's longer than usual presidential campaign, but I am surprised by how little discussion I have heard regarding the April 7 Avon Township race. Nearly two years ago, Avon Township officials eliminated the position of food pantry supervisor, citing that doing so would save the township money by using existing township employees and volunteers to distribute food. Since then, the economic downturn has increased the number of needy in the township, and now the staff is unable to keep up with demand for assistance. The Avon Township Food Pantry only receives 2 percent of the township's operating budget. But, not long ago Avon Township officials approved raising taxes to fund more than $40,000 in pay raises to themselves. They were no doubt patting themselves on the back for all the money they saved by understaffing the food pantry. For this reason, I will be supporting Sam Yingling and the other members of the Avon Forward party. The incumbent members of Avon One will only continue to look out for those they have supported in the past: themselves.
