Madigan: Blagojevich indictment confirms distrust
The Illinois attorney general says former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's indictment confirms a long-standing distrust of his administration.
Lisa Madigan said Thursday that it also underscores the culture of corruption in Illinois.
The Democrat, the daughter of powerful Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and a possible contender in the 2010 gubernatorial race, says it's a "terrible day" and "dismal chapter" in Illinois history. But she says it's also a chance for real reform.
Prosecutors charged Blagojevich and five members of his inner circle in an alleged "pay-to-play" scheme to trade government action for personal and political enrichment. The governor says he's innocent and will fight to clear his name in court.
