Batavia police nab Aurora woman accused of ID theft

Batavia police say an Aurora woman used her position at an insurance company to access another woman's consumer credit report.

Claudia G. Madrigal, 32, of the 1100 block of Solfisburg Avenue, was charged with identity theft Wednesday in Kane County Circuit Court. The Class 3 felony is punishable by two to five years in prison.

Detective Shawn Mazza said police were alerted to the case after a Batavia woman learned an Aurora insurance company inquired about her credit Jan. 28 even though she had no ties to the unidentified business.

"It caught her attention," Mazza said.

Madrigal accessed the report using the name and date of birth of the victim, who was an acquaintance, according to police. Mazza said no money or property was stolen, and police still are establishing a motive.

Mazza added that obtaining or possessing personal information constitutes identity theft, even if the information is not used for anything.

Madrigal was arrested without incident at her residence Tuesday and released on a personal recognizance bond. She is set to appear April 15 before Judge James C. Hallock.
