SUV plows into Elgin house after driving through Ryerson Park

A 72-year-old Dundee Township man crashed his sports utility vehicle into a home on the 300 block of Ryerson Avenue in Elgin Tuesday morning, after jumping a curb, knocking down a fence and driving through a small park.

Police say at about 10:30 a.m., Glenn Smith, 72, was driving an Isuzu Rodeo north on Route 31 when he veered off the road into Ryerson Park. The vehicle traveled about 75 yards through the park and across Ryerson Avenue, eventually hitting the enclosed porch at the front of the house.

Smith, who was taken to Provena St. Joseph's Hospital with minor injuries, told police he could not remember what happened and that he may have blacked out, Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said. No charges have been filed.

A female resident was home at the time but was uninjured, Swoboda said.
