Man gets 37 years for ice pick killing

EDWARDSVILLE -- A man who stabbed his Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor to death ith an ice pick in Madison County has been sentenced to 37 years in prison.

Thirty-year-old Jared Mugrage of Springfield cried as he read a statement at his sentencing Tuesday in Edwardsville. He also apologized to Bill Giedeman's family.

Authorities say Mugrage stabbed the 67-year-old Giedeman in the neck at his Collinsville home in December 2007, then stole the victim's car and forged one of his checks. Giedeman's body was found beneath debris in his yard.

Mugrage's father has said his son would live with Giedeman for a while, then move out when he found work. He says the two men were good friends.
