Huntley man charged in second attack
A Huntley man charged in a booze and baseball fueled beating last summer that cost its victim an eye was back behind bars Monday, accused of two counts of domestic battery for a weekend altercation at his home.
Police arrested Jaroslaw "Jerry" F. Czapla, 31, Saturday afternoon on the two misdemeanor charges, and a third of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence, court documents show.
He spent the weekend in the McHenry County jail and appeared in court this morning, where a judge set his bond at 10 percent of $3,000.
A criminal complaint filed over the weekend alleges Czapla grabbed a female family member on the right arm, causing a bruise, and shoved a male family member to the ground. He also is accused of ripping a telephone away from the female victim as she attempted to call 911, causing a cut on her right arm.
All three charges are Class A misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
At the time of his arrest, Czapla was free on $10,000 bond while awaiting trial on mob action and battery charges stemming from a July 19 fight at his residence in which a 32-year-old Gurnee man lost his right eye.
Authorities said Czapla, his 37-year-old brother, Boguslaw "Bob" Czapla of Elmwood Park, and Maciej Trojnar, 33, of Elmwood Park, were drinking heavily at a child's 2nd birthday party when they began talking baseball with the victim.
Talk became taunting and then physical violence when the Czaplas and Trojnar, a Chicago Cubs fans, learned that Robert Steele was a fan of the Chicago White Sox, authorities said.
During the scuffle, Steele of Gurnee was kicked in the face with a steel-toed boot, police said, causing him to lose his eye and suffer a broken nose and orbital bone.
The older Czapla is facing charges of aggravated battery and mob action. He is free on bond while awaiting trial. Trojnar, charged with mob action and battery, is a fugitive.
Jaroslaw Czapla is scheduled to appear in court on the new charges April 9.
