Sox put Owens on waivers; MacDougal makes roster

One week before they open the regular season with a home game against the Kansas City Royals, the White Sox on Monday all but finalized their 25-man roster.

The big news out of the Sox' training camp in Glendale, Ariz., was center fielder Jerry Owens telling reporters he was placed on waivers.

That means - barring a move by general manager Kenny Williams - Dewayne Wise and Brian Anderson are likely to open the season as platoon center fielders/leadoff hitters.

Heading into Monday's Cactus League game against the Angels, Owens was hitting .230. Wise was hitting .302 and Anderson .283.

It also looks like enigmatic relief pitcher Mike MacDougal has earned a roster spot.

The White Sox made six official moves Monday, trimming their roster to 27.

Pitchers Lance Broadway, Jack Egbert and Jeff Marquez were optioned to Class AAA Charlotte. Infielder/outfielder Josh Kroeger and relief pitcher Randy Williams were reassigned to minor-league camp, and second baseman Jayson Nix (strained right quadriceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to March 27).
