Mettawa land sale disputed

A Mettawa resident has filed suit in Lake County circuit court against village officials regarding 12 acres that became part of the proposed Costco site south of Route 60 and east of Riverwoods Road. Arthur Juhrend says village officials intended to use his property for commercial purposes before the Sept. 1, 2005 sale, but represented their purchase offer as being for parks or open space. The land was appraised at a much lower residential value, according to the suit, and was rezoned before the sale without Juhrend receiving direct notice that it was being considered. The village, Mayor Barry MacLean, Trustee Karl Nagel and village attorney John Zimmerman are named as defendants. According to the suit, Juhrend received more than $2.5 million for the land, a "change of lifestyle" and moving expenses. The suit alleges the property with hotel/office zoning was worth $5.5 million. He is seeking damages of $3 million for fraud and $1 million in punitive damages.

Service award named

Rotary Club of Gurnee has named its annual service award after Warren Township High School District 121 Superintendent Philip Sobocinski. What will be called the Dr. Philip Sobocinski Award will be presented to a graduating senior May 13 at the annual honors night program. That evening typically features awards and scholarships provided by donors. District 121 is based in Gurnee. "Rotary's model is service above self and Phil exemplifies that," said Marty Klauber, who leads Rotary Club of Gurnee. This year's honors night will be in Warren's auditorium on the freshmen-sophomore O'Plaine Road campus in Gurnee.
