Mundelein deputy police chief demoted after internal probe

Findings from an internal investigation over unspecified rule violations have resulted in the demotion of Mundelein Deputy Police Chief Cameron Eugenis, officials announced Friday.

Police Chief Raymond J. Rose said in a written statement he reassigned Eugenis to sergeant from his post as one of two deputies, effective immediately. Eugenis is a 22-year Mundelein police veteran.

Citing advice from attorneys and restrictions regarding public discussion of personnel matters, Rose said he could not provide additional information.

Village officials confirmed March 22 that an internal complaint about certain rule violations by Eugenis was filed. They said the accusations came from within the department, not a member of the public.

Officials said an internal investigation, which followed proper protocol, was led by Rose and Village Administrator John Lobaito. In his news release Friday, Rose said "appropriate corrective action" was taken against Eugenis after the probe.

Eugenis couldn't be reached for comment.

Veteran Mundelein Trustee Ed Sullivan said he didn't know specifics about the case and could only speak in generalities about the demotion. He said he still considers Eugenis a friend.

"It's a disappointment," Sullivan said. "This is the first time I've ever had concern the deputy chief wasn't doing a good job."

Eugenis, 45, was placed on a paid leave of absence about two weeks ago. He's been in charge of the department's operations division since his promotion to deputy chief in 2001.

Mundelein village board members were notified about the internal investigation in a memo from Lobaito on March 20.
