Save money through others' bad fortune
Here is some very bad news that could save you money.
Due to the condition of the economy, Bright Hope, one of the stores that carries crafts made by people in developing countries, is closing its Hoffman Estates store and cutting its online inventory.
That means that through April 4 you will receive 20 percent to 70 percent off whether you buy at the store, 2060 Stonington Ave., or online at brighthope.com.
As you may know, world leaders have said that the economic situation is even more dire in developing countries than in the United States.
Bright Hope plans to continue working with the fair trade Christian groups that help these artisans. It will shift to grants and microlending and try to help them find new buyers.

Have faith: It's time to think summer
Despite the economy and even despite the weather outside, we need a few new items that say "summer."
There's something nostalgic about these little folding tables. And they are so bright and cheerful.
They are on sale for $18, down from $30, at Kohl's stores and Kohls.com. Search for "summer living table."
Can't you just see yourself carrying a few out to your patio or deck so you and friends can enjoy after-dinner drinks and chats?
The days will be longer, the nights warmer. We know it's true, it just seems so far away.
If you say 'junque,' this book is for you
Continuing with the themes of saving money and outdoors, Sue Whitney's Outdoor Edition of "Junk Beautiful," (Taunton, $21.95) is hitting the market.
You are either a junker or you're not, and many times these products leave me cold. They're either made from something that would be expensive because they do not fit anyone's definition of "junk" or they are not really attractive or useful.
But when it's for the out-of-doors, my aesthetic quotient gets a little looser.
And plant holders and candle holders can be pretty rustic and still work, I think.
Attach an apple picker (with its graceful metal prongs) to a rake handle, and you've got a great look for a little glass candle holder. And old enamel teapots and minnow buckets make great planters.
We'll admit it, if you can score some used commercial retail store fixtures (Whitney recommends used restaurant supply outlets), she will show you how to make them into very cool furniture.
