Recycled items star in Museum of Science & Industry's Smart Home
A recyclable steel dining room table, chandeliers made from motorcycle wheels and kitchen countertops of recycled glass are stars in the Museum of Science & Industry's redecorated Smart Home.
The 2,500-square-foot home that was erected on the museum grounds about a year ago will show off its new features throughout 2009.
The home office has been moved to the loft hallway, and now the house boasts a nursery with a video camera that the parents can monitor from any home control panel. The crib and changing table are bamboo, and the linens organic.
Other features in "Smart Home: Green + Wired" include paints with low volatile organic compounds and a sofa upholstered in eco-friendly linen. The bathroom tile is made of marble from the restored Wrigley building.
Outside new features include a turbine that harnesses wind power and turns it into energy for the home while sending extra to the utility company.
EarthBoxes - closed, self-watering containers that allow for easy and quick growth of vegetable and flowers - will be displayed.
Farmers markets are planned on the first and third Friday from June 5 to Oct. 16. Shopping will not require museum admission.
A special ticket with a specified entry time is required. The price is $23 for adults, $22 for seniors and $14 for children age 3-11. Museum admission is included.
The museum is at 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive. Visit msichicago.org or call (773) 684-1414.
