Review misses point of play
My jaw hit the floor when I read the review of the CLC's production of "Animal Farm." The words "socialism" or "communism" are absent. The director of the play mentions "power and greed" and compares it to "Illinois politics." As anyone who has read, much less studied, Orwell. "Illinois politics" is embodied by the oppressive farmer, Mr. Jones. The animals overthrow Mr. Jones and institute socialism. The pigs' lust for power transforms the socialistic society into Stalinistic communism. Perhaps the director of the play did not actually read "Animal Farm?" I would suggest that he do so along with reading "Homage to Catalonia," which documents Mr. Orwell's, (who was a socialist), realization that the utopian society imagined by socialism quickly descends into communism where indeed "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."
I would think that the author of this review, being a writer, would be aware of Mr. Orwell's intent.
