Need a new pothole repairer? Check eBay

You really can find anything on eBay these days.

A foreman in the Palatine Township Highway Department found a used infrared heater - the latest in pothole repair technology - on eBay.

The price: $15,000.

"New, we're talking more than $50,000," said Highway Commissioner John Powers.

Typically, road crews pour in a hot mix, use a roller and hope it bonds with the older pavement. There's always a seam, however, which allows water to enter.

This new system will actually melt the old pavement and allow the new mixture to plasticize. It's effective in cold weather too.

"We may get another year or two out of a spot and not have to repave," Powers said.
