Helping hands hearten food pantry

It never ceases to amaze me that even in these tough economic times, people not only continue to find that little bit of extra to share with those in need, but they find ever more creative ways to do so. Consider the following examples of how local residents collected food for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. A young girl hosted a gingerbread party back in December and asked each of her guests to bring along a grocery bag full of food to donate to the pantry. A resident at a local senior housing complex hosted a chili supper and asked residents to please bring along a can of food, or two, to share with the pantry. A 9-year-old girl asked invitees to her birthday party to bring toiletry items for the food pantry in lieu of gifts. And my personal favorite, the Super Bowl party at Churchill School, to which the students brought in canned goods to show support for their favorite team. The winning team was the one who brought in the most food. It's a fact that during the past year need has risen and donations have fallen at local food pantries. The staff and the board of the food pantry are so grateful for the continued support of the community and the creative ways that residents have brought attention to the hunger problem in our community. Without this vital support, we could not continue to serve the needy. The food pantry is housed in Grace Lutheran Church at 493 Forest Avenue, and has provided emergency food assistance since 1979. Please continue to remember the pantry with donations of food or money, used to purchase fresh items such as milk, eggs, cheese, produce and meat.
